hatman: HatMan, my alter ego and face on the 'net (Default)
( Jul. 15th, 2011 08:46 pm)
First off, a signal boost from [livejournal.com profile] mizkit (who got it from a reader):

A friend of a friend of mine, Amy Ahonen, disappeared on 7/8 from the highway west of Golden, CO. Her wallet, keys, and cell phone were all still in her car. The official search for her was called off after a day and a half. Recent information suggests she may have been abducted, and could be anywhere. Now family and friends are trying to harness the immense power of the internet to get the word out, and try to connect with anyone who might have information regarding Amy’s whereabouts. They have created a Facebook page, Help Find Amy, and a Twitter feed at #findamy, and are asking that people simply pass her picture around.

Also from [livejournal.com profile] mizkit but much less serious is the old interview meme. (I'd put it in a separate post but I don't want to spam you, especially as there's another random post buzzing around my brain.)

Here are the rules:

1. If you’d like, leave me a comment saying, “Interview me.”
2. I will respond by asking you five questions of a very intimate and creepily personal nature. Or, you know, not so creepy/personal. Whatever. (Note: I suck at coming up with interesting questions, but I'll do my best. Or maybe I'll just recycle [livejournal.com profile] mizkit's, because they're really good.)
3. Update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
4. If you so wish, include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the post.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you ask them five questions.

I was asked:

1. Is money the answer or the problem?

Yes. And no. To both.

Money is a huge problem in that it causes people to act selfishly and screws up the distribution of resources. A small percentage of people, often as much by luck as anything, end up with far more than they need, sometimes more than they could ever use. At the same time, a large percentage of people are deprived of the resources to fill the most basic human needs.

On the other hand, money is the answer to other problems. It can be used directly to fix problems. And it can actually channel our innate selfishness to motivate us to do important things. At its best, it allows people to be rewarded for their contributions to our society in a form that they can use directly to get what they want or need when and as they choose, without having to go through complex barter exchanges.

In short, I'm in favor of a combination of capitalism to motivate people and socialism (and social programs) to see to basic needs: food, water, shelter, medical care, eduction, etc.

2. Would you sign up for a generation ship?

Whoa. There's an interesting one. And it kind of comes with some big assumptions, since I don't think I'd be a candidate for one in my current condition.

But, you know what? I think I would. It would be exciting and fascinating. It would be hard to leave my family behind, though. And I'm fairly certain they wouldn't go.

3. Mutant power! What would yours be?

Oh boy. I should have a good answer to this.

I kind of want to say that I want Jean Gray's power. But that's kind of cheating, because Jean can do pretty much anything. Flight, telekinesis, and telepathy (both send and receive). But I so want to be able to fly. And there's so much you can do with TK. And telepathy... I wish the whole human race was telepathic. It would change everything. You can't lie telepathically. And you can't be misunderstood. It even transcends language barriers. And it allows you to actually get to know people in a way that isn't possible any other way. To truly understand their point of view.

But, like I said, that's kind of cheating. I could wish for the power to heal. Because I don't want a destructive power, and I do want to be a healer. But that carried with it such a weight of responsibility. I'm not sure I could handle it.

And the thing is that I have a superhero alter ego. HatMan. The guy in my default userpic. And he has a super power. And, in a way, it's a healing one. HatMan, at his best, has the power to be funny. Which is no small thing. Laughter is medicine for the mind.

4. There's a Zen saying, "If you leap the net will open." Are you a leaper?

I'm not familiar with that saying. (And it sounds oddly un-zen, encouraging rash action.)

Am I a leaper? In a way. Probably not. I'll put it this way: I will happily go on a road trip with no route and no destination. I will improvise. I will make plans and then throw them out the window with no regrets when something else comes up. But I'll do all of that with a stack of maps and guidebooks and a full suitcase. I'll sign up for the generation ship, but I'll do so knowing that the thing is well built and stocked. I'll go out into the world, but I'll do it with a bag full of stuff to prepare me for any reasonable contingency.

In short: I'll leap, but only after I've made my own damn net.

5. You're given the chance to join a fictional world (um, not the one I'm going to write you into). Which one would you choose, and why?

Now that's a fascinating question. I'm not sure how to answer it.

I could pick a kids' universe. Sesame Street or My Little Pony or something. A place where life is simple, there's some real magic in the world, friends are true, and life's problems can all be solved. But that's kind of a cheap choice, isn't it? Limiting. And besides, it could get boring fast, living it 24/7.

I could pick a comic book universe. Where super powers exist, the world is filled with shining examples of heroism, and good wins out over evil in the end. But those worlds are incredibly chaotic and dangerous for ordinary folk. And I think real live super heroes can encourage complacency and humbleness as much as they can inspire people to better themselves.

Maybe one with magic? But that's as much a double-edged sword as anything.

You know, for all the time I spend with fictional universes, it's surprisingly difficult to answer this.

Wait. You know what? Star Trek: TNG. I want to explore the universe, and I want to do it with advanced technology, and I want to do it in a world where people have hope and where they look out for each other. Oh yeah, and meet aliens. And doctors who can fix me by waving a few blinking lights in my general direction. You'll find me in Main Engineering.

I've been thinking lately about how I'm not happy with the person I've become. I miss the person I was, the one who met the world with a smile, a beanie copter, and a thoughtful observation. Not sure how to get back to that place. Been thinking of posting about that, to ask for your thoughts on the matter.

In the meantime, [livejournal.com profile] htbthomas posted this meme today, which fits right in with that train of thought. My head is still fogged up from sleep issues (more than usual, on both counts - thanks to side effects from the latest attempt, the last four months or so of my life are a drugged blur), but I'll do my best. Because I think we could all use it:

Post a comment, and I will reply with one or two reasons why I think you're great. In return, you have to post this same meme on your blog and comment for other people.

There was a meme going around a while back (brought to mind by a recent post from [personal profile] meretia) about how the problem with the internet is that we develop all these casual connections without really getting to know people as well as we might think. I didn't respond to any of the instances where I saw it posted because, ironically enough, I didn't feel like I knew the people who posted it well enough to know what to ask.

OTOH, I'm always happy to answer questions, and I would like to develop better relationships with the people on my access/friends list. So... I can't seem to find the exact wording used in the meme, but I think you get the gist. Ask me anything. As long as it doesn't violate a confidence or something, I'll answer.

I've avoided doing a few other "ask me a question" memes that have been going around because I dread having to come up with questions, but for some reason I decided to give this one a go...

Give me your favorite pickup line.
• I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can satisfy my curiosity
• Update your journal with the answers to the questions
• Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions.

I haven't been much of a friend lately. Or blog community member. Or whatever. I haven't been posting, haven't been commenting, having been reading as closely as perhaps I should (though I have been reading, and did end up going to at least skip=100), haven't been responding to comments. Sorry about that. I don't really know what to do about it, but I'd like to try.

Meantime (and perhaps a help in getting the blogging ball rolling again)... I came across an interesting meme from [livejournal.com profile] mizkit. I wanted to pass that along. Maybe give it a go myself, though no guarantees. Could be good and fun if it works out, and I think several of you might enjoy doing it yourselves:

Give me the title of a story I’ve never written, and feedback telling me what you liked best about it, and I will tell you any of: the first sentence, the last sentence, the thing that made me want to write it, the biggest problem I had while writing it, why it almost never got submitted to magazines, the scene that hit the cutting room floor but that I wish I’d been able to salvage, or something else that I want readers to know.

Comment to this post and I will give you 5 subjects/things I associate you with. Then post this in your DW and elaborate on the subjects given.

[livejournal.com profile] htbthomas asked me about:

1. Dreamwidth

It's the first thing I've really been excited about in a while now. I'm watching the service come together, and it looks shiny and awesome. The management style is beyond refreshing and clear out to incredible. I'm meeting new people and having fun and everything looks so shiny.

2. Hats

I started going bald back in elementary school. One of my immune system's least harmful attacks, but still... I was embarrassed about it. And my well-meaning mother ended up making me even more self-conscious about it. So I started wearing hats. All the time. Got a decent-sized collection of them. And then, in nerd camp, we needed to pick nicknames to put on our doors. Being cheerfully insane and fond of hats, I went with MadHatter. Which then became my chat room handle. And then HatMan evolved as MadHatter's alter ego for amusing people during lulls. And then random people, almost all of them complete jerks, started using MadHatter in various places and I was getting confused with them. So it became HatMan. Even though I don't wear hats nearly as much as I used to, it's who I am on the 'net.

3. NYC

What can I say? I live nearby. It's The City. In fact, it's so much The City that when I went to Paris as a child, my first thought, looking around in the light of day, was, "Hey! Where's the city?"

It's got everything. Often within 5 blocks of wherever you happen to be standing. It's busy, it's packed, it's exciting, and... it's overwhelming. And sometimes clausterphobic. My first comment (a couple of years before the Paris trip) about the city was "It's too much for me."

I do take advantage, from time to time, of what the city has to offer. But, to me, the best of the city is based out of two apartments in the Upper West Side.

4. Gargoyles

Best Disney cartoon ever. Rich mythology, complex storylines, developed characters, a healthy dose of fun gags, an interesting mix of sci-fi and fantasy... The show had everything. And it was beautiful. It's right up there with Batman:TAS on the list of my all-time favorite cartoons.

5. Inventing

As mentioned in my Dreamwidth profile, I've invented a number of things over the years... only to learn that someone else had beaten me to it, often by years. (Annoyingly, in the case of the Select Comfort mattress, by much less.) I've had a few other things over the years which never really got past pencil sketches. But still, one of these days, I'll come up with something cool and doable that hasn't actually been invented yet. One of these days...

Meme time.

This one's gone around my flist more than once. I could have sworn I'd done it before, but I can't find it. And apparently last time it went around I promised [livejournal.com profile] schnuffichen I'd do it. So I guess I'll post it (again?). I should say, though, that I'm kind of worried that I'll have trouble with some of these. If my memory fails me, please don't take it personally.

Comment and I will....
a) Tell you why I friended you.
b) Associate you with something -- a fandom, song, color, photo, etc.
c) Tell you something I like about you.
d) Tell you a memory I have of you.
e) Ask you something I've wanted to know about you
f) Tell you my favorite userpic from your list
g) In return, you need to post this on your own LJ.

Also, while I'm at it, from [livejournal.com profile] schnuffichen and [livejournal.com profile] theblackshadow and probably others:

The problem with LJ: we all think we are so close, but really, we know nothing about each other. So I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Ask away...Then post this in your LJ and find out what people don't know about you!

(As if I haven't given you ample opportunity already...)

From [livejournal.com profile] htbthomas (and half my flist by now...)

1. There are 30 questions.
2. Next to each number, write only the name of the person who fits.
3. Answer one question with one name.
4. Don't tell the questions to anyone who isn't doing the meme.

Doing this more because I promised to than anything, at this point, so don't put too much stock in any of my choices...

2. I will respond by asking you 5 questions of a very personal nature.
3. You will update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
4. You will include this and an offer to interview someone else in the post.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed you will ask them 5 questions.

I was asked... )

And... that's about the best I can do. Probably not quite the answers you were looking for, but the best I could come up with tonight.

And... hoo boy. I wonder how hard it'll be to come up with decent questions for you guys...

From [livejournal.com profile] hbthomas... Comment on this post. I will choose seven interests from your profile and you will explain what they mean and why you are interested in them. Post this along with your answers in your own journal so others can play along.

(Yes, I've done this. But always happy to do it again. :) )

I was asked about:

1. Alton Brown is the host of several Food Network TV shows, including my personal favorite: Good Eats. He explains the science of cooking in fun and nerdy ways. Good food, silliness, and chemistry lessons! What more could you want?

2. Comic Books. (In particular, my subscription list.) Long answer... )

Subscription list, plus a few discontinued titles )

3. Egrets are pretty white birds who live mostly in estuaries (half-saltwater, half-freshwater habitats found in and around the mouths of rivers). Like herons, they're wading birds. There are a good number of them who live on the Gulf Coast of Florida, where we spend some time in the winter. They're just really beautiful, especially in flight.

4. Flolloping. "This is a thing that only live mattresses in swamps are able to do, which is why the word is not in more common usage." From "Life, The Universe, and Everything" - book three of The Hitchhiker's Guide To the Galaxy. You can read the relevant excerpt
here. If you're wondering about live mattresses:

Very few things actually get manufactured these days, because in an infinitely large Universe such as, for instance, the one in which we live, most things one could possibly imagine, and a lot of things one would rather not, grow somewhere. A forest was discovered recently in which most of the trees grew ratchet screwdrivers as fruit. The life cycle of ratchet screwdriver fruit it quite interesting. Once picked it needs a dark dusty drawer in which it can lie undisturbed for years. Then one night it suddenly hatches, discards its outer skin which crumbles into dust, and emerges as a totally unidentifiable little metal object with flanges at both ends and a sort of ridge and a sort of hole for a screw. This, when found, will get thrown away. No one knows what it is supposed to gain from this.

Nature, in her infinite wisdom, is presumably working on it. No one really knows what mattresses are meant to gain from their lives either. They are large, friendly, pocket-sprung creatures which live quiet private lives in the marshes of Squornshellous Zeta. Many of them get caught, slaughtered, dried out, shipped out and slept on. None of them seem to mind and all of them are called Zem.

So, in short... somewhere out there (in the Guide universe, anyway) there's a planet with a species of living mattresses. The mattresses bounce and play in the endless swamps. And just as only a pig in a nice big mud puddle can properly wallow, so it is that only a happy, springy mattress in a swamp can flollop. I can't do it, and odds are rather good that I'll never even see it done. Still, it sounds like fun. And it's a neat little obscure reference to the series. :)

5. Girl Genius Online is one of my favorite webcomics. I first picked it up in graphic novel form, and then found that I could read the whole series for free on the web. Including the stuff that hadn't made it into the ever-more-rarely published books. It's about, as the motto goes, "Adventure! Romance! Mad Science!!" Takes place in a steampunk world. (Kind of retro sci-fi. A romanticized 19th century Europe filled with things like artificially intelligent robots, but built with period hardware - steam engines, gears, and a lot of gleaming metal.) It follows the adventures of Agatha Clay, a young woman who turns out to be a Spark (someone with the "spark" of genius unique to mad scientists). One with an unexpected history and a significant destiny. It's really cool. Check it out.

And a list of other webcomics... )

6. Porcini mushrooms are a type of mushroom native to certain parts of Italy. IMHO, they're better than tuffles. Rich earthy flavor that goes great with beef. You can find them dried in some US supermarkets. Reconstitute them in hot water, and you get not only delicious mushrooms, but also a quick mushroom stock.

7. Whirled peas are, as expected, pretty much self-explanatory. A nigh-homophone for "world peace" (which is also on my interests list). Saw the phrase on a bumper sticker, thought it was fun, added it to the list for the heck of it. I am not actually a fan of mushy, blended-up peas (though I know at least one person on my flist enjoys them as a french fry topping). I do, however, sometimes like frozen peas.

Tagged by [livejournal.com profile] schnuffichen. Which leaves me with a bit of a dilemma. I haven't been tagged for anything for ages, but I don't really seem to get "into" much music. There's whatever I hear on the radio when I'm driving by myself (relatively rare these days) and there's whatever I have in my MP3 directory, which hasn't really been updated since 2000 (maybe a dozen songs added since then, give or take). But I'll see what I can do...

List 10 songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now, shaping your summer. Post these instructions in your LJ along with your 10 songs. Then tag 10 other people to see what they're listening to.

A randomish selection from my mp3 folder )

Tagging... Oh, let's say [livejournal.com profile] alliegee, [livejournal.com profile] beansideirae, [livejournal.com profile] brianamj, [livejournal.com profile] ksarasara, and [livejournal.com profile] leeson. That's only five, but maybe half tags make up for double songs?

Go ahead, make my lunch day...

There's this meme going around my flist:

Pick 10 people and give them the "you make my day" award. If you're picked, you are charged with picking 10 of your own.

And several of my friends have picked me. For various reasons. But mostly because, while I can be long-winded and/or overly technical, it seems (to quote Angel)... I'm a funny guy.

It's been really cool. Means a lot to me, from each of you. Especially these days.

But... I don't pick favorites. I'm no good at it. And I don't generally like the idea of it anyway. Not to mention that I seem to be having trouble keeping in touch with many of my closest friends. (Ironic, that.)

So, even though I know how awesome it is to be on the recieving end, I'm afraid I'm not returing the favor this time. Even though, for once, I was actually tagged to do something. Multiple-tagged, at that.

What can I say, flist?

Tough noogies.
