schnuffichen. (Apparently, I owe her another meme, but I forget what it was...) I'm not one to pick favorites, but I'll see what pops to mind. If I forget a good one... oh well.
1. One movie that made you laugh:
The Princess Bride. Classic!
2. One movie that made you cry:
Biventennial Man. It always gets me. When I read it as a short story, when I read the expanded novel version, when I saw the movie... I don't know. I don't cry about these things in real life, but I always cry for this.
3. One movie you loved when you were a child:
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Although the tunnel scene scared the heck out of me. I always had to look away.
4. One movie you’ve seen more than once:
That's very rare for me. But the movie I've seen most is Batman. I never saw it in theaters. The unprecedented blowout marketing campaign triggered my iconoclastic instincts. (SNL's Weekend Update: "The ad campaign will actually hurt ticket sales because if you go by the bus stops fast enough, it's just like seeing the movie...") Then Mom got me the tape for my birthday, and I ended up watching it about 30 times over the next few years. I can probably still quote chunks of it verbatim.
5. One movie you loved, but were embarrassed to admit it:
I don't allow myself to be embarrassed about these things. What's the point? Enjoy what you like! Screw societal expectations and all that bunk! (Is that a new word for you,
schnuffichen?) Chick flicks, kids' movies, video game movies, power rangers... I've enjoyed those and more, and I'm not embarrassed to say so. I will say, however, that I loved Independence Day. I don't know if they meant it that way, but it was a brilliant and hilarious parody of the genre.
6. One movie you didn't like:
I don't remember. I remember going to movies against my better judgment, because the family was going and I kind of felt I should, too. And I turned out to be right. They all sucked. I ended up sitting there, bored out of my mind, picking apart all the plot holes and predicting (usually accurately) where everything was going. I quickly learned just to say no to movies I know are going to be crap. Which is a disheartening percentage. But I haven't wasted memory space on them.
7. One movie that scared you:
I avoid scary movies whenever possible. The reason being: Jaws. I was at a kid's birthday party, maybe five years old? Something like that. And, to prove how tough and cool they were, they put Jaws on. I knew myself well enough to avoid it. Hung out in the kitchen, where there was a steady flow of kids. But eventually, they dragged me in to the living room (not literally, but talked me into it so I could be with everyone). I tried to ignore the TV, but happened to look over during this scene... There are a bunch of people at a hotel pool. The shark gets into the pool and starts eating everyone.
I asked what was happening. How did the shark get into the pool from the ocean? Seems it was a saltwater pool (which happens, so close to the ocean - easier to fill that way), connected to the ocean by a pipe. The shark swam through the pipe into the pool.
My young brain processed this and learned something: Sharks can swim through pipes and eat people in pools. The idea took root, somewhere deep down. And, from then on, I refused to take baths. I knew it was stupid and irrational, but I couldn't sit in the bathwater (naked, vulnerable, and alone) without being assaulted by images of a shark bursting through the bottom of the tub. Somehow, a shower was okay. And so was a regular pool. But it was years (at least a decade) before I was comfortable taking a bath.
So... I don't watch scary movies. Besides, I don't enjoy being scared.
8. One movie that bored you:
See #6. I hate boring movies.
9. One movie that made you happy:
Hmm. Let's go with The Neverending Story.
10. One movie that made you miserable:
What Dreams May Come. I loved it. It was beautiful. It almost made me believe, for the first time, in the concept of catharsis. But... it left me sobbing.
11. One movie you weren’t brave enough to see:
I suppose you could say any scary movie falls into that category.
12. One movie character you’ve fallen in love with:
I don't think I really have. I've had a few crushes on actresses. Nothing serious. Just thought they were beautiful and projected a personality I liked. Oh, wait. I've got one...
Kermit the Frog! (Also, Fozzie Bear.)
13. The last movie you saw:
The Dark Knight. In IMAX. The real IMAX, with the 3-story hemispherical screen. It was Teh Awesome.
14. The next movie you hope to see:
Hmm. Let's see... Nothing in August. Nothing in September. Nothing in October. Hmm. Bolt is out in November, but... I'm not so sure about that one. I might see it, but... I don't think it counts as something I'm really hoping to see. December... there's another Punisher movie? Why? Hmm. The Tale of Desperaux is a good possibility. In January, there's Inkheart. The book was decent. I might go see that. Hmm. That's as far as the listings go...
Oh, wait! I missed seeing that the next James Bond movie is due out in November. Stupid name, but yeah, after Casino Royale, I'm looking forward to seeing that.
15. Now tag five people:
This is has been done by several people on my flist already. Most of the ones who want to have probably already been tagged. So... I'm tagging [Person 1], [Person 2], [Person 3], [Person 4], and [Person 5]. Take a number, if you want.
