Well, I contacted Dell's online support. Much better experience than I'm used to with them.
After running through several diagnostics, I finally convinced them that it's a defect in the screen itself. They're sending out a tech with a replacement.
I also got info on how to access the HDD. I took it out, blew on it, and reseated it. We'll see if that helps. None of the other steps have held for more than a day at a time. Ghosting wore off the next morning, as did reinstalling BIOS. Still working with tech support. We'll see if they come up with anything.
In other news, the new comp shipped! I checked on it, but never saw any progress. Then, suddenly, I got a shipping notice. Not sure why I didn't see the intermediate steps, but it's done now. UPS will probably pick it up on Tuesday, so it'll be here sometime late this week, I expect. No backing out now. *g*
Meantime, the drive does boot eventually, and none of the tests I've done have shown any problem with it. I've got a Ghost backup image and a replacement on the way. Things could definitely be worse.
