Well, I contacted Dell's online support. Much better experience than I'm used to with them.

After running through several diagnostics, I finally convinced them that it's a defect in the screen itself. They're sending out a tech with a replacement.

I also got info on how to access the HDD. I took it out, blew on it, and reseated it. We'll see if that helps. None of the other steps have held for more than a day at a time. Ghosting wore off the next morning, as did reinstalling BIOS. Still working with tech support. We'll see if they come up with anything.

In other news, the new comp shipped! I checked on it, but never saw any progress. Then, suddenly, I got a shipping notice. Not sure why I didn't see the intermediate steps, but it's done now. UPS will probably pick it up on Tuesday, so it'll be here sometime late this week, I expect. No backing out now. *g*

Meantime, the drive does boot eventually, and none of the tests I've done have shown any problem with it. I've got a Ghost backup image and a replacement on the way. Things could definitely be worse.

Yay for the new screen! And yay for the new comp finally shipping. And, hey, if Murphy visits, at least you'll have two good laptops out of the deal. (It's almost like tricking him and his stupid law. *g*)

Oh, and completely off the subject of your laptop... but I keep forgetting to ask, so I might as well do it now before I run off to work and forget - My comp's getting hot pretty quickly lately, and I'm thinking it may be from not so clean vents? Anyway, do you know offhand how to clean them? If not, don't worry about it. I can call dell myself. I just needed to write this down somewhere. *g*

Yeah, things are looking up on the comp front. :)

As for yours... I don't know what to tell you specifically, but in contacting Dell, you'll be better off IMing than calling. Check out their support site or you can click here to go directly to the chat page. Oh, but it's probably best to use IE. Some of the stuff they have requires pop-ups and activex controls.
