Following the previous entry, I got interviewed back. Ten new questions below:
Tigger asked me:
1. If you could live in any place and time, what would you choose?
Fictional-wise, I said Star Trek: TNG last time.
In our reality, I physically could not have survived before insulin injections were invented. And I don't know how I'd be managing if not for Lyrica. And, really, even if we put medical concerns aside, there's too much cool stuff that's been developed in recent times. A lot of important scientific progress. I don't think I'd want to live in the past.
Geographically, I'm pretty happy with where I am (though I could do with being a little further to the northeast).
But that's pretty boring, so I'm going to pick New England. 50 years from now. Enough time for us to have made further progress, but without it becoming so overwhelming as to cause future shock.
2. If you could go back in time and change one thing, in your life or someone else's, what would it be?
Messing with the past is tricky. You never know what unintended consequences it could have. I've made mistakes in my life. There are some things I wish I could undo. Friends I've hurt. It's hard to pick amongst them. And making mistakes is part of life.
But there is something bigger I've thought about. Something recent enough that it shouldn't cause too many ripples, yet big enough that it could change millions and millions of lives. One small thing. Challenge the "butterfly ballot" in Florida's Dade County before it got approved for use in the 2000 elections. It was an illegal formatting, and if that had been caught and the ballot replaced with something less confusing, then Miami's voters would have had their intended votes counted correctly, which would have been enough to win Florida (and thus the presidency) for Gore.
3. If you could teach the entire world about just one thing, what would it be?
Huh. That's fascinating. There's a lot of cool stuff out there. Important science, fun things, etc. But what I really wish that everyone knew and understood is the very simple and sappy (yet absolutely critical) message that the other 6 billion humans (no matter the shape, color, opinions, or anything else) are people, too.
4. You're going to be stuck on a desert island. You get to take five things with you. Whatever you want. Real or fictional, alive or inanimate. Anything, as long as the main purpose isn't to facilitate your escape. Food, shelter, and solar-powered multimedia player included free. What's on your list?
I like your idea of a Kindle. I love mine. I'd load it to the gills.
I'm not sure what I'd do without internet access, but I feel like it's cheating to say that because (a) I'd be able to use it to escape (b) I would no longer be isolated, which kind of defeats the question. Instead, let's upgrade that multimedia player to a Holodeck. Solar powered, but it takes a lot of energy to run so usage is limited.
What else?Robin Williams. A young Geena Davis. Barbara Gordon. My dog. Not exactly an item, but within the spirit of the question, I think, if perhaps a bit of a stretch. He loves the sand and the island has enough trees to provide sticks. He'll be happy, and a valuable companion.
A woodcarving kit. I don't know how. I'm not sure I'd be any good. But I've been kind of interested in finding out. A good, relaxing way to pass the time, I think. And, as mentioned, the island has enough trees to provide wood. And maybe I can use it to upgrade the shelter.
Scuba gear, with instructions. I don't know how. I'll have to be careful in learning. But I want to explore what's around the island and say hi to the fishies.
5. You and five people from your flist each get a super power. Who gets what and why?
This is another one of those questions that seems fun to ask but is harder than expected to answer. I picked my power last time, so let's see what I can do for my flist.
I have to start with
dave7 because he gave me the best compliment I've ever received. In a similar meme, a few years back, he said that if he could give anyone super powers it would be me because I'd know how to put them to good use. I'm not sure what power to give him, though. I'm tempted to say time travel because I know he's into Dr. Who. And, actually, considering how hectic his life gets, that might be just the thing.
Huh. Hard to pick others. I'll just sort of skim over the list and go by the whim of the moment.
ladymirth gets teleportation. So she can come visit us whenever she needs.
ksarasara gets to fly. Much more fun than running.
beansideirae gets telepathy. She knows why. ;)
leeson gets a different, random super power every day.
(Sorry, Rhymers, wasn't sure how to include you in this, and wasn't sure I could do so fairly. And sorry to anyone else left out.)
annabtg asked me:
1) If you could make one thing in the world disappear forever, what would it be?
Huh. Not sure how to answer that. Is "pollution" too easy an answer? Hatred? Ignorance? Reality TV?
No, wait. I've got it. Nuclear weapons.
2) Is it better to have loved and lost or to not have loved at all?
It is better to have loved and lost. It's sad and it's hard and it hurts, but a life without love is empty.
3) A place in the world you've never been to and you'd really like to?
Hmm. Managed to cross Australia and New Zealand off my bucket list a few years ago (though there's still much to see). Would like to get around Europe some more. Italy, Greece, Norway... Oh, Antarctica might be pretty cool (er, so to speak).
But I have to pick one place, huh? A little late to choose NASA Mission Control. How about the bottom of the ocean? Not sure where, though. 95% of it still has yet to be explored.
4) What's your favourite out of all the simple shapes (circle, square, triangle etc.)?
That's a fun and unexpected one. I like circles. They're round. It's kind of soothing.
5) Bath or shower?
When I was a little kid, I went to a friend's birthday party. To show how tough and cool he was, he insisted on showing one of the Jaws movies at the party. I left the room to hang out in the kitchen with some of the other kids, but people kept going back and forth and encouraging me (directly or otherwise) to join them for a while. Finally, I broke down and went in. I came in to see a scene in which the shark was attacking people in a pool. I asked how the heck that had happened. I was told that the pool had a pipe connecting it to the ocean, and the shark had swum through. My young subconscious mind latched onto this concept: Sharks can swim through pipes to suddenly pop up and eat you while you're in a body of water that is not the ocean.
I knew it was irrational, but I couldn't help it. It never bothered me in pools or lakes or even the ocean, really. But in the bath I couldn't shake the feeling that a shark was going to burst through the bottom of the tub and eat me. I've taken showers ever since. I think I'm actually over it by now, but I haven't tested that. I just got in the habit of taking showers.

I knew I wanted to give you a power, but I couldn't think of what would make you happy. At least, not off the top of my head. But then I thought about what was making you unhappy - both in general and specifically of late.
Telepathy does many things. No more wondering what people are really thinking. No more miscommunications. No more wondering if people are telling the truth. No more struggling to understand the other person's point of view. No more struggling to make your own perspective clear. And, best of all, when you're with someone who loves you, you can truly feel it.
It doesn't fix everything, but I think it goes a long way.

And aww, the shark story! Poor boy!
