Well, in part it was a joke. If you had telepathy, you'd know why I chose that power for you. ;)
I knew I wanted to give you a power, but I couldn't think of what would make you happy. At least, not off the top of my head. But then I thought about what was making you unhappy - both in general and specifically of late.
Telepathy does many things. No more wondering what people are really thinking. No more miscommunications. No more wondering if people are telling the truth. No more struggling to understand the other person's point of view. No more struggling to make your own perspective clear. And, best of all, when you're with someone who loves you, you can truly feel it.
It doesn't fix everything, but I think it goes a long way.
