(Note: This post is backdated so as to prevent it from showing up at the top of my journal.)

UPDATE: To make things simpler, I've moved the discussion to a super secret thread on the Goblins forum. The idea is still explained best here, but if you have thoughts or want to see the latest, go there.

As I write this, the Goblins fundraiser is nearing its goal. It's looking like they'll have the money to save their house. (ETA: THEY JUST DID!! And it was so beautiful to hear.) Thunt has said that if they manage to buy the house he'll set aside a wall for Goblins fans. We can send him stuff and he'll put it up on the wall. I want to make a poster/card from all of us.

When I say all of us, I mean all the fans. Whether you've donated or not. Thunt says that just reading the comic counts as support, and I think that's an excellent way of looking at it. Not everyone can afford to pitch in, but if you're reading, you're part of it.

Here's what I want to do: (UPDATED to reflect change in plans)

1. Create a banner which reads "WELCOME HOME". (Which is both a welcome to Thunt and family to their newly-purchased home, and a welcome to the fans to what Thunt has termed "the Goblins embassy" - a place which is home to all Goblins fans.) Get a different artist to draw/decorate each letter.

2. Get all of you to sign it. Send me a note. Your signature (real name and/or screen name, whatever suits) and maybe a couple of sentences. Whatever you'd say if you were signing a card. If you can, write something by hand and then send me a picture or a scan. If you can't, just send me the text. You can send it to imnotthunt at comcast dot net. I'll take them through July 31.

3. I'll paste the messages into a strip of whitespace below the WELCOME HOME lettering. I'm hoping/planning to make it about 4 inches tall, so that the final banner will be eight feet long and one foot tall.

4. After a reasonable timeframe (the end of the month?) I'll finalize the poster and send it to Thunt. I'll cover the printing costs. Then he can post it on the Goblins wall.

What I need from you: Your signature. Just write a note, take a picture, and email it over. It shouldn't take more than a few minutes. That's it. If you can't take a picture or aren't comfortable with using your actual signature, I will also happily take plain text. (You can also just make something with whatever graphics program you may have handy. Even MS Paint can handle text and/or a "pen.") Use your actual name, your screen name, an image that represents you, whatever you like. If you include a note, keep it short. Two or three sentences, perhaps. Like you would if you were signing a card. I'll take them through July 31.

What I also want: The signature is plenty. But if you're willing to draw a letter, that would be even better. (Take a look at page 2 of the forum thread for more information.) If you can think of anything else to offer (I've already heard from a printer), let me know. I want this to be the best it can be, and I want it to be from all of us. (ETA: ALL LETTERS CLAIMED!)

What do you say? If you're up for it, let me know.

If you like the idea, please repost the link to this page. Spread the word. I want as many people as possible. Preferably without Thunt seeing it, but that shouldn't be too hard given how busy he is right now.

Comments open to all, even if you don't have an LJ account. As mentioned, there's also the forum thread. You can send your signatures/notes and any questions to me at: imnotthunt at comcast dot net (Spaced out to defeat spambots.)

good idea

but i do not think that many signatures would fit on a poster.
personally i'm going to donate the 200$ required, and tell danielle to pick a strip to put on the wall, but i would chip in to the poster idea too if it happens.

Re: good idea

Depends on how big it is. And how big the signatures are. I've done this sort of thing before, on a smaller scale. I think I can get a good number in. If I get too many to fit with the plan I have, I can just put the WELCOME HOME at the top, and make the rest of the thing just signatures. There are ways to make it work. So long as we get enough people participating.

Welcome home THunt

First off, I think this is a great idea. :D

Secondly, how about some of our resident artists, be they hand drawn or Photoshopped or whatnot, send you fan comics instead of a collage of THunt's work. That way it's more personal. And, since the point is to get it put on OUR wall, it is a great way to make the point that it is the Fan's wall.

You could set a deadline for Mid-August and set up an email account specifically for the art work and signatures/greetings/well wishes.

I'm game for whatever though. Good luck!

Re: Welcome home THunt

Thanks! :)

Fan art would rock. If there are people willing to do that, it would be awesome.

And yes, I set up an email address just for this. I mentioned it in the post, but I'll make it more prominent.

Re: Welcome home THunt

I'd be willing to do a fancomic if somebody wanted to give me something to work with. A topic, a quote that Tarol is fond of, some cool idea that would be totally awesome to see drawn out. Send a PM to HerdsCats on the goblins forum and we'll work something out

Re: Welcome home THunt

I'd also be willing to do some fan art. Altough, it'd be on a smaller-scale level. (Thunt said my name once, and it was like the greatest moment ever! which sounds a bit sad, and that's why it might be a fun piece of art.. tough not fanart.. )

The scene from scott pilgrim where young Neil's greatest moment ever was when Scott called him Neil comes to mind. Anyway, the point was, that's what that wall is there for! I think... O.o Errrhhhhhh

Re: Welcome home THunt

I don't need a whole background. What I'd actually like is to get several people willing to draw, and give each a piece of the background to do. The area behind/around each letter, perhaps.

Re: Welcome home THunt

Also, I'm not sure who you are, but I'd have to say "Thunt said my name once, and it was like the greatest moment ever!" would go very well on a card. ;)

We should make sure to include some art from the forum games. maybe even get LSN to make a picture for the occasion.

Dude! That is an awesome idea. :) I can take a pic of my signature and send it to you. :)

I like it. I'll try and come up with a fan art that doesn't suck.

Very heart warming idea.
I will try to draw something apropriate.
Unfortunately, I will not be able to draw the background - I can only do something presentable in small scale...

From: [identity profile] alvarin.livejournal.com

I have a good idea for the background, I think - modify the "Happy Birthday" panel from the webcomic to say "Welcome Home" or, rather, "VV3LCAM HOUM"

How sad is it I looked for the 'like' button on this post? <_< Even if this isn't THE background, I think it should definitely be in there somewhere. -jadeness

We could also send a variety of small fuzzy toys. A couple should actually be mice.

All for this. Also, I applaud you, PGW, for everything you've done to help out on this. I hope people live up to your previous donation challenge for today.

Great idea

I very much approve.
Here is my bit for it:

You know... symbolism stuff.

Wait, let me get this straight: Are people drawing the letter, or are they getting a letter template to draw in?

Because, er, I wasn't exactly the best at drawing letters by scratch, at least not in a timely manner.

I am cool with this otherwise! I'm definitely giving a signature (even though I don't have a forum account or anything) anyway. :D

You get a square, 8x8 inches (~20cm, 768 pixels). Use an image editing program to create the letter if you don't want to draw it yourself. The completed ones so far are 450 pixels high and use the Chubby Cheeks font (white letters on a light blue background), but don't feel you have to stick to that. (Although it would be nice if they were roughly the same size.) Decorate around it to the best of your artistic ability.

Are you up for that?

You don't have to be a forum member at all. I want this open to all fans. Just email me when you're ready.

From: [identity profile] koolsnowball.livejournal.com

I am really cool and know how this livejournal comment thing works.

anyway, yes I am up for this! What letters are still available (unless you have that posted somewhere? ... If you don't, that might be handy...)

E is the last letter available. All yours if you want it. I've been keeping track of it in the thread on the Goblins boards.

Oh, and a few people have mentioned that they plan to break with existing formatting, so don't feel you have to stick with it.

I'd love to contribute some artwork/fan art if you need it. Or I could always just tack on a little something to my signature if you like. I like this idea though.

I've still got a couple of letters unclaimed. You get a square, 8x8 inches (~20cm, 768 pixels). Draw the letter as you choose. The completed ones so far are 450 pixels high and use the Chubby Cheeks font (white letters on a light blue background), but don't feel you have to stick to that. (Although it would be nice if they were roughly the same size.) Decorate around it to the best of your artistic ability.

Are you interested in that?

Either way, please do send me your signature. If you want to include some fanart with that, go right ahead. Just remember that the signatures are going on a 4-inch-high strip, so try to keep it to a reasonable size.
