htbthomas (HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! :) ) gave me:
*New Jersey
It's where I've lived almost my whole life. We moved here when I was a year old. Moved to the other side of town when I was twelve. And lived here ever since. (Not counting my time away at college.)
New Jersey is basically The Suburb State. There's a diagonal band that cuts across the state, from Philadelphia to New York City. From where we are, it's a little more than an hour to either place, depending on traffic. That whole band is pretty much one long strip of suburbs. North of that are the ritzy suburbs. To the south, there are still some farms (most of the ones around here have been paved over and turned into housing and retirement communities and such). Also some swamps. Then, of course, you've got beaches (which I'm not overly fond of).
It's a good place to grow up. And to live. We've got parks and open space and relatively fresh air and reasonable safety and all that. And we've got a good community with one of the best libraries and public schools around. And we're close enough to the big city that we can take advantage of all it has to offer.
Still, we do have a lot of traffic. And industry. And toxic waste. And the airport is overtaxed to the point that it takes twice as long waiting in line for a runway than it does to actually fly the distance to Boston. And, to be truthful... I've always been a New Englander at heart. New Jersey is close, but I think, given the choice, I'd be just a little bit further northeast.
*FoLCs
My only real fandom. I've enjoyed a lot of shows and such over the years, but never really become part of any other group. Just been on the fringes of a few of the quieter message boards.
I think that's one of the things I really like about FoLCdom. The Lois & Clark fandom is a small community. And it's filled with the nicest, coolest people. A lot of talented writers, too. Surprisingly few trolls and badfic authors.
For about half my life now, the majority of my friends have been FoLCs (or people I met through the fandom). And pretty much all of my stories have been L&C.
Unfortunately, I've lost interest lately. And had a falling out with some of the more prominent people in the group. Hadn't been reading for ages. Hadn't written much of anything in even longer. And most of my friends had drifted off to at least the outer edges of things. So... I left.
Still, it does give me a unique username. And the majority of my friends are people I know from the group. And I have fond memories.
*beanies
I'm assuming you mean the hat in my icon. That's "HatMan, avenger of boredum (and bad speller...)" He's a superhero of sorts that I developed back in my early chat room days. He was created to fill in conversational lulls. He'd drive in on his Sombrerromobile, have an adventure, and then drive off. Later, he was joined by his sidekick, Hairpin, who drove a Capcar. I was never quite sure what he looked like, but I knew that he wore a beanie copter (and, of course, a mask and cape).
I'd recently gotten an actual beanie from my sisters. It was a birthday present. I'd never heard of such a thing (Dad had to explain it to me), but they chose it because they thought it suited my personality. And they were right. I almost never wear it, unfortunately, but it's the most special hat in my collection.
I brought it to college and kept it in a prominent spot on my bookcase. One day, my roommate came back with a bumper sticker promoting the band "Propellerhead." He wasn't fond of the band and didn't have a use for the sticker, but they'd been handing them out for free and he'd just sort of picked it up. Because hey... free sticker! Why not? I promptly got permission to take it off his hands because even though I'd never even heard a Propellerhead song, I knew exactly where that sticker belonged. And it's been on the front of the hat ever since. (And I still haven't heard any of the band's songs.)
To me... it just means fun and zaniness and silliness and all that happy stuff. It's like a penguin or a platypus. You just can't help but be at least a little cheered when you see one. And what's life if you can't smile and laugh (and make other people happy, too)?
*comics
Something else that just seems to suit my personality. And they're fun to read. There's the fantasy aspect of it. The escapism. And also the heroism. And, in the better ones, good storytelling. It's adventure. It's colorful. It's... satisfying to the rather deep part of me that always wanted to be a superhero. To help people and make a difference and all that. And to have nifty super powers. And a cool costume.
Lately though, the Big Two companies (DC and Marvel) have really seemed to (as my supplier put it) "have lost their way." A lot of bad decisions on the part of the higher-ups and some of the writers. Very disappointing. Luckily, there's a good crop of worthwhile books outside the Big Two. So I've still got enough on my order list to get bimonthly packages from Jacey Services.
*web comics
The list of comics I read has grown over the years. Browsing webcomics is like reading your own personalized version of the funny pages. There are so many out there. You can just pick the ones you like and still have a full page's worth to read. Such variety, too. From little gag strips to full-page dramas with ongoing storylines and huge casts. Covering so many different subjects, too. The geeky zany humor, romantic drama, and steampunk adventure of Girl Genius, the personal experiences of Planet Karen (a 4-panel daily diary on a website dedicated to feminism in comics), the political humor of Doonesbury... I could go on and on. In short... comics are fun. And nifty.
