Alaska is cool (no pun intended). Been there twice.

Also been to Hawaii twice, but wasn't so enthralled with it. Yes, the volcanic soil produces a lush and beautiful plantscape, but the tropical sun is unforgiving. Worst and fastest sunburn of my life (less than 30 mins exposure). And, of course, so much of it is just built up and touristy. Worth seeing, but there are better places to go, I think. Heck, by the time you get to HI, you're halfway to New Zealand, and I thought that was much nicer and more memorable.

As for the "rim" thing... wait... are you saying there are places in the middle there? I'd heard rumors, but I thought it was all corn and potato fields or something. ;)

Actually, it's the result of about three different trips. Go up to MA every year, and we went up to Maine once. Used to drive down to FL every year, so we passed through everything in between (and stopped at various places along the way). Did a trip once where we flew to TX and then drove to FL, seeing what we could as we went (a couple days in New Orleans, etc). The rest are pretty much individual trips to visit friends and family and such. I've been fortunate to be able to get around so much.

My sister has seen even more. She spent a summer in CA, so she drove across (taking about two weeks) and then drove back by a different route.

... And, huh. Didn't notice, but looks like I missed marking off PA. Oops. Better go fix that.
