Yes, I'm late doing this, but that just means the fun lasts longer! (There should be a rule that you can't start yours until the previous one has been officially closed. Or maybe not. It's a thought, anyway. ... But hey! You have a big enough playlist, there's no reason you can't play again, get a different list...)
Oh, right. The actual meme.
Step 1: Open up whatever MP3 program you use and add every song in your collection.
Step 2: Put it on random.
Step 3: Pick your favorite lines from the first 20 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing the song.
Step 4: Post and let everyone you know guess what song and artist the lines come from.
Step 5: Cross out the songs when someone guesses correctly.
Step 6: DON'T GOOGLE THEM.
(As with others, the quoted lines aren't always my favorites. I try, but I can't make things too easy for you guys. Not to mention that my favorite thing about a lot of songs is the tune. I long ago got out of the habit of actually listening to lyrics. All too often, they ruin the whole thing for me.
Also, my song collection totally needs updating.)
1.Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see...
bananabelcher
2.You were my lesson, I had to learn. I was your fortress, you had to burn...
psychofurball
3.You can't tell me it's not worth trying for. I can't help it, there's nothing I want more...
bananabelcher,
kaylle, and half credit to
ksarasara (who should know the song, if not that line, from SSAOS... ;) ).
4.As I hung up the phone, it occured to me: He'd grown up just like me. My boy... was just like me.
brianamj,
kaylle, and another half credit to
ksarasara.
5.It's just a ball of dust, underneath my feet. It goes around the sun, doesn't mean that much to me...
(To make it a bit easier, a bonus line from a bit later: There's a raging fire in my heart tonight, growing higher and higher in my soul. There's a raging fire in the sky tonight. I want to ride on a silver dove far into the night...)
vigii Late entry from an unknown. Classic.
(Hint: I didn't know the artist on this one. I just knew it from a movie...)
6. (Okay, this one's going to be really easy, but there's no other choice...)
Shot through the heart, and you're to blame!
psychofurball,
ksarasara,
brianamj, half credit to
kaylle for getting the band and the other half to
bananabelcher for (unknowingly!) getting the title! Go team! :D
7. Let's not do the wrong thing, and I'll swear it might be fun. It's a long way down when all the knots we've tied have come undone... (Hint: The band is a little obscure, but
bananabelcher has at least heard of them.)
8. (Again, there isn't a real choice here...)
Let's go surfin' now, everybody's learnin' how. Come on and safari with me...
brianamj,
bananabelcher,
kaylle, and 3/4 credit to
ksarasara for almost getting the title.
(Incidentally, this song will always make me think of Hawaii. Sitting at the airport with my sisters, I played this song on my spiffy new portable CD player. It only seemed right. It was the first thing I remember hearing after we landed.)
9.I pick up a box. I lifted some rocks. While I stood on my head...
kaylle
10.It's a thousand pages, give or take a few. I'll be writing more in a week or two...
annabtg and
kaylle
11.I have run, I have crawled. I have scaled these city walls. These city walls...
psychofurball,
ksarasara,
kaylle, half credit to
brianamj, and a smile and a nod to
bananabelcher, who at least knows the song well enough to get the next line.
12.But wait! What do I see? ... Is she walking back to me? Yeah, she's walking back to me!
ksarasara,
brianamj, and
kaylle
13.Mama tells me I shouldn't bother, that I should just stick to another man, a man who surely deserves me... But I think you do. (Hint: Next line, I guess... "So, I cried, I prayed, and I begged. Love, me love me. Say that you love me...")
ksarasara
14. So gather up your jackets, move out to the exits. I hope you have found a friend... (Half credit to
bananabelcher and
kaylle for getting the title.)
15.Laughin' and a-running (hey, hey), skippin' and a-jumpin', in the misty morning fog with, ah, our hearts a-thumpin'...
bananabelcher, plus full credit to
ksarasara and
kaylle, since, even though neither one of them knew the artist, I must admit that I didn't, either.
16. You planned a trip, to Idaho, just to watch potatoes grow... No one on this? Really? Hmm... Well, if you don't recognize a parody song involving potatoes, I don't know what to tell you. (3/4 credit to
ksarasara for getting the artist and part of the title.
17. You say you'll give me a highway with no one on it. Treasure, just to look upon it. All the riches in the land... No one on this, either? Now I'm really surprised. (Hint: A bit later... "But all the promises we break, from the cradle to the grave...")
18.They gave you life, and in return you gave them hell. As cold as ice, I hope we live to tell the tale...
psychofurball
19. Is there anybody trying to get through? My eye's so cloudy, I can't see you... Look now, look all around. There's no sign of life. Voices and other sounds. Can you hear me now? (Hint: This was also on SSAOS)
20.And I walk these streets, a loaded six-string on my back. I play for keeps, because I might not make it back. I've been everywhere, and still I'm standing tall. I've seen a million faces, and I've rocked them all!
ksarasara
Let the guessingbegin! continue, if you think it's fun and you're not just wracking your poor brains.
(Since most of them have been called already, I'll probably post the answers soon. Tomorrow night, most likely. Then, later, since we're having so much fun, I'll probably do Round II. For now, though, there are a couple more active ones on my flist, so it's all good.)

11. Darn it, this is on an 80's quiz, too. I'm just going to say U2.
12. Pretty Woman - Roy Orbison? :-)
There's a few others that look familiar, but I can't place them.

4. Cat's in the Cradle, Harry Chapin
5. This is familiar, but I can't place it
6. Shot Through the Heart (is that the title?), Bon Jovi
8. Surfin' Safari (is that the title?), Beach Boys
9. YODA! Weird Al! that song cracks me up ;) (although my favorite line would have to be, "I know Darth Vader's really got you annoyed, but remember if you kill him then you'll be unemployed..." :D)
10. Paperback Writer, The Beatles
11. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, U2
12. Pretty Woman, Roy Orbison (I'll admit I wouldn't have known who this was if the same song hadn't come up in someone else's meme {g})
14. Closing Time, but I have no idea who it's by

Okay, I think that's all I know. I still love this game :)

3. Yep! (Not sure if it's on the soundtrack. Probably. I know it from the radio and just as a general Bryan Adams song. I'm pretty sure it was released before RH.)
5. Yeah, I'm not surprised. It's a little obscure. I only know it from a movie soundtrack, and I had to look up the artist. (I have the CD, but it's been years since I looked at it.)
6. Right band, but not quite on the title.
9. Yes, that's my favorit line, too, but I thought it'd make things too easy. I had confidence, though, that you, at least, would know it from those lines. I love that song, too, BTW. Oh, and it's how I made a quick friend at an MIT Hillel gathering. Went to get a drink. Found myself going "So-da" and, an instant later, found myself chorusing "S-O-D-A, So-ho-da!!" with the frosh I'd just met. Instant bond. *g*
15. Yeah, I didn't know the artist, either, even though I felt that I should. Had to look it up, and was then very surprised.
Anyway... wow. That's a lot of points. 8 1/2, I think? Well done. :)

I'd love to take credit, but I hadn't recognized this one.
16. You planned a trip, to Idaho, just to watch potatoes grow... No one on this? Really? Hmm... Well, if you don't recognize a parody song involving potatoes, I don't know what to tell you.
Well, I'd guess Weird Al, then... but I don't recall a spud song... hmm...
19. Is there anybody trying to get through? My eye's so cloudy, I can't see you... Look now, look all around. There's no sign of life. Voices and other sounds. Can you hear me now? (Hint: This was also on SSAOS)
D'oh... does it count as cheating, then, if I watch it? *g* I mean, it's not expressly written in the rules... Oy. That didn't help. Too many that I'm not entirely familiar with. *sigh*
17 stumps me... sounds a *tad* familiar, but I’m not getting it.
Now I'm off to read everyone else's comments that probably have better answers...
