Was browsing Citysearch.com, looking for a restaurant for Mom's birthday (we'd planned to go to CT, but had to cancel), when I came across a small list of national restaurants which had recently gotten good reviews (the top 10 or whatever). In the middle of the list...

Phuket Thai Restaurant

I'm sure that means something good in Thai. But when I read it, I just get a word I'd rather not have echoing in my head. Do they not realize this? Has no one told them? Or is this some subtle form of advertising?

Oddly enough, Phuket (pronounced poo-khet, I think) is a province of Thailand. I always have to think about the pronounciation when I see it written out.

:O

I knew of Phuket, the city (which, according to Wikipedia, is the capital of the Phuket province) but didn't recognize the English spelling. We call it something like "poo-KEH" in Greek.

Paul, I don't blame you. Heh.

See ya,
Anna.

I've seen a Vietnamese restaurant called Mo'Pho. Makes me think of this! :)

lol, this is making me feel better about the Chinese restaurant we had down the block when I was a kid. "Hung Fat Kitchen."

Yeah, Mom's happier this way, actually. We'll go to Six Flags and shopping and out to dinner and maybe ice skating and the park and stuff. We don't have to drive several hours, we don't have to spend the money on the hotel, and, most importantly, we'll have the whole family together under one roof. Should be good. :)

I had a lot of fun with this when I discovered it...

Thai airways flew me to Phuket in Bankok.

... Of course, I was 15 at the time.

lol, oh boy.

That reminds me of a poor innocent freshman in college. His name was Sattaporn Pornprom, and he came to us from the Middlesex School in Bankok. I'm not kidding.

The poor guy. During Rush, every frat listed him in the tracking system as being there. People would call looking for him. "Oh, he just left..." Even though I don't think he set foot inside a single frat the whole week.

And sometime, towards the end of the week, some drunken frat boy(s?) drew graffiti in large letters at the base of the bridge. "Sattaporn lives!"

All that, and it was just his name. What's worse, I don't think he'd even been in the country before.

*shakes head*

I'd like to have expected better out of MIT.
