Took my first dose of Xyrem last night.

I'm not really sure how well it worked. I hadn't been sleep well this week anyway.

My memory of last night is pretty hazy, but it went something like this:

I went to sleep around 10. I think I slept more deeply from 11 to 12, give or take, but I'm not sure. At 2, my alarm went off, reminding me to take my second dose. (Xyrem is only effective for a couple of hours, so to get the full benefit you're supposed to take a second dose in the middle of the night.) Fell back asleep, and again I think I slept more deeply from 3-4.

But I woke up more than a few times over the course of the night. In part because Mom kept coming in to check on me. It's a powerful medication and I have apnea (where I stop breathing when I'm deeply asleep) and there was some concern that it might be a little too effective, so we (Mom, the doctor, and I) that she should maybe look in on me from time to time, just to be extra safe. Turns out it wasn't necessary. And her doing so woke me up. But I did manage to get back to sleep relatively quickly each time. I think. Pretty hazy on the details.

All in all, I got more sleep than I'd been getting this week, but less than I usually do. CPAP reports that my apnea was not significantly worse.

Tired and foggy this morning. Impossible to tell why. Is it because I've been short on sleep all week? Is it because I finally started catching up on the sleep that I've missed? Is it because of the lingering effects of the Xyrem in my system? The Xyrem interacting with my Lyrica? Some combination of the above? Or just one of those days? Impossible to tell.

I stay on the current dose for the next week, then, if all goes well, increase it for the rest of the month.

Of note: The other medication the doc wants me to try, which just might stabilize me on a 24-hour sleep schedule, might well interact with the Xyrem. They're not sure because it's very new, but they warned me that combining the two might go badly.

The good news is that the area oak trees stopped pollinating, so I can breathe outside again.
