(This post backdated by one year to keep it from showing up at the top of my journal.)

A few days ago I woke up with an odd thought. Imagine if fans of the Rachel Maddow Show all chipped in and bought an ad at, say, 9:55pm on April 1. The end of the last commercial break of the night. (Stick with me here; I'm not totally nuts.) Put together a video from everyone wishing her a happy birthday. (Also a great April Fools gag!) I can just see it. Cutting back from commercial to see Rachel's jaw drop, her face turn red, and her head quickly hidden.

Sadly, even a 15-second ad buy would be prohibitively expensive. (See? Told you I wasn't totally nuts.) And, really, even if we could raise that kind of money (say, by getting a couple of hundred fans to chip in a few dollars a month), there are better uses for it.

But! What if we didn't do it as an ad? What if we could enlist the help of the TRMS staff?

Here's the idea: We quietly spread the word amongst the usual #maddow crowd and the fansites and so on. We make the fan video. The staff finds something that will be the Best New Thing In The Worldtm for the night. Except when it actually comes to air time, they swap the tape and play the happy birthday video.

I don't know. Just wondering.

Of course, we're well past April of this year. And April 1st, 2012 is a Sunday. But April 1, 2013 is a Monday. It's also Rachel's 40th.

Sure, it's more than a year and a half way. And who knows what'll happen between now and then. But the thought is buzzing around the back of my head now. So I thought I'd ask. Worth pursuing? If not, I hope the thought is at least worth a giggle now.

ETA: Sarking suggests maybe we could do it for the show's birthday in September. And get it, if not on the air, at least on MaddowBlog. In which case we should get started organizing soon. And I'd need someone else to spearhead, since I'll be out of town for much of August.

Thoughts? Comments? Volunteers?

Re: Nice...

Excellent! Thank you. :)

I also posted at [livejournal.com profile] maddow_kicks, and I'm getting some interest there.

What I need most right now is for people to spread the word. And for someone to be willing to take charge of collecting, organizing, and editing the video.
