Haven't posted in a while. Haven't had much worth saying. Probably still don't. But I'll throw a few things together anyway.
Don't remember if I've mentioned this before, but my dog has psychic powers. It's amazing. He has the uncanny ability to locate the exact spot where a family member is most likely to trip over him 5-30 minutes into the future. About to start cooking? You'll find him right in the middle of the T intersection between the counter, fridge, and stove. About to serve dinner? He'll be there, halfway between the counter and the kitchen table. Going to watch TV? He'll be in the doorway. And it's not like "Oh, you're getting ready to cook. I'll move closer." (Well, sometimes it's that.) It's "I sense that 5 minutes from now you will start getting ready to cook. I'll be waiting." I don't know how he does it.
Mom also has psychic powers. She talks about how her mother had them. Could always find her, etc. The one time friends convinced her to play hooky and go to the beach, Grandma sensed it and met her at the exact right spot of the exact right beach. Mom can do something similar with what she calls "Mommy Radar" - the ability to sense where in the giant mall/megastore/whatever we are, for example. She has other stories, too. But the psychic ability she possesses without even knowing it is akin to the dog's. When she's away from home, she can call at the exact worst possible time. For example... my sleep schedule moves around the clock every few weeks. So there are large spans where I'm basically nocturnal. Sometimes, Mom will sleep over with one of my sisters (usually so she can watch the kids). Hours will go by in which absolutely nothing happens. She's asleep, the kids are asleep, I'm just watching TV or playing games. Middle of the night, my dinner time will roll around. I'll get up, get everything together, put the food on the table, have the fork in the air to take my first bite (or sometimes I'll be chewing the first bite) and... the phone rings. Mom woke up for no particular reason, realized I'd be awake, and decided to chat. It's uncanny.
Just thought I'd share that.
In other news, I ordered a double-bladed lightsaber for myself. Should be fun next time my nephew comes over and insists on a duel. Seller described it as "near mint in box," mentioning that it had been used "once" before being put back. It arrived today. A few scratches. Some discoloration on the blades - looks like paint rubbed off on it, probably from the hilt. There's on spot on one of the blades where it was clearly bent from a major impact. And there was a sticker on the box indicating that it was purchased at a Wal-Mart back in '99 for about half what I paid for it. All of which I was fine with, really. They don't make that model anymore and it has been over 10 years. I can't really complain about the price. And it'll surely get some dings and whatnot the next time my nephew comes over. So I shrugged it off and put in fresh batteries (finding there were batteries in there with expiration dates of '01 and '03). And that's when I found out the sounds don't work. Sometimes, I can get it to make a few noises (with a lot of static), but turns itself off within seconds. I emailed the seller. I don't think he has another one, but I'm hoping to get a partial refund. We'll see.
ETA: He wrote back promptly and apologetically, and offered the option of a partial refund without my having to ask for it.
Also ordered some spiced blueberry jam from Apple Branch Pantry's Etsy shop. We stumbled onto them at a street fair in Alaska, and the spiced blueberry is the best. Excellent flavor, and their homemade jams are made with much less sugar than the commercial brands. This is the first time I ordered from them online. Not cheap, but it's good stuff, it goes a long way, and it's nice to support actual people rather than huge corporations. (Especially when the people involved are so friendly.)
Randomly: They're planning to turn Chernobyl into a tourist hotspot. No, really.
Finally, there's this browser meme that's been going around my flist lately. I suppose I'll give it a crack, for the heck of it.
Put each letter into your browser, see what pops up first for each letter. Not allowed to take out anything embarrassing or naughty but you are allowed to take out super private things that would name and shame someone else and replace with the next thing.
