1. New York ComicCon is this weekend. I've wanted to go in previous years, but something always got in the way. I'm going to give it my best shot this year. Hopefully, scheduling and all will work out.
Thing is that for my own amusement I kind of want to go as Matches Malone (a street crook whose identity Batman has used many times). You can see him a little better on this page. Unfortunately, I don't have a bright green suit jacket, yellow & black striped tie, fake mustache, or brown slacks and I'm not likely to find them reasonably priced in my size in the next few days. I do have aviator-style glasses, a Batman belt (which Matches would never wear but I think would be a fun addition to the ComicCon costume version), and, of course, matches.
Now, Matches has had other appearances. In the comics, he's almost always wearing brightly colored clothing. I do have a dark green button-down shirt, but I'm not sure that would work.
But! Matches also appeared in Batman: The Animated Series. You can see him shortly after the 3-minute mark in this video. There, he's just wearing a suit and a newsboy cap - which I do have. Still not the mustache, though. And the glasses would be out of place. And, really, I'd just be wearing a suit and an outdated hat. With a Batman belt buckle and a match hanging out of my mouth. I don't know that it'd be worth it. (Also, I'd have my shoulder bag with my insulin and stuff. And my cane. Neither of which really goes with the theme, such as it is.)
I mean, I could just wear my Astro City shirt and be done with it. And be more comfortable.
(Incidentally, while searching for pics of Matches, I stumbled on the BatLimo and absolutely had to share.)
2. The other big thing I'm looking forward to is the Rally to Restore Sanity. I'd previously posted a few ideas for signs to take to the rally. Now I'm trying to figure out the practical details involved. The cane takes up one hand, and it'd probably be good to have the other free even if a fair-sized sign is better managed with two hands (especially outdoors, in the wind). I could rig up something to hold it for me, but the rally site quite reasonably asks that you not have anything huge and unnecessary blocking peoples' view. Don't want to do that. I could hang it around my neck and wear it in front, but that would obstruct the front of my shirt, and I don't want to do that, either.
I'm thinking maybe I can make up a bunch of signs and put them on a 3-ring binder (or something along those lines) and just attach it to the back of my backpack. Not as visible, not as large, but more practical and reasonable. And then people (and/or the wind) could flip through at their whim.
Any thoughts on either situation?
