So, my sleep study today:
I told them I wanted to go to sleep around 8. They told me to come in around 7 because it takes an hour to hook you up. I came in at 7. Had a bit of trouble getting in the door because she was in the stock room and didn't hear the bell, but we got that sorted out.
We had to walk all the way to the last room because they'd done a bunch of studies over the last couple of days and the other 9 rooms hadn't been made up yet.
She showed me around a bit (even though I was already familiar with the setup, it was appreciated). Then she left because her shift was over. New person came on at 7:30. Came to check on me around 7:45, asked when I wanted to go to bed. I said 8. "Oh. Then I should get you hooked up." She disappeared. Came back to ask about paperwork. Left. Came back to give me paperwork. Left.
Finally started hooking me up around 8:30. I didn't get to bed until 9.
The bed was... not comfortable. Looked nice, but it was a hard slab. And the electrode box was behind my pillow, where I like to have my arm. And instead of putting the wires for the leg electrode down my pant legs, she ran them down my leg then back up the cuff, which meant they were shorter than they should have been and that they were outside my pants, so they caught on the sheets when I tried to roll over.
It took a long time to fall asleep. Then I kept drifting off, only to wake up again an hour or so later. At 3, she came into the room.
"I'm ending the test."
I'd been promised that I could sleep as late as I wanted, but no. "Can I stay for a while?"
"Let me get the wires off, then we'll see how you feel." *puts the lights on* "I wouldn't have come in if you'd been asleep, but I could see from your brain waves that you were up."
Well, yes. But I'd also just rolled over and was actually drifting back off to sleep.
"We needed 6 hours of data. It's been 6 hours, and you were in every sleep phase."
It took over 20 minutes to get the wires off. "Can I stay a while longer?" "Let me ask my manager." *leaves, comes back* "You can stay until 4, maybe 4:30. But we need you out of the room so we can get it ready for the next person." The other 9 rooms had been made up. I can't imagine they'd have 10 people tonight.
Turns out her shift was over. So she left. I had about half an hour to get dressed, pack up, have breakfast, and leave. No chance of getting back to sleep even if I could have after 20 minutes with the lights on while she pulled wires off and scrubbed the sites with alcohol-soaked gauze.
So.. I'm home. And I'm very tired. Today is going to suck. So is tomorrow. Possibly Thursday, depending on how I sleep tomorrow. And I'm not sure how good their data is going to be, given how poor my sleep was.
Can't wait to see the bill for this one!
