Deadpan:

A style of humor in which jokes are told with outwardly straight-faced seriousness but underlying ironic intent.

The Internet makes deadpan humor considerably easier to accomplish but trickier to accomplish well. Visual and vocal cues are hidden from the audience. This means that the teller doesn't have to actually maintain a straight face, but also that the audience may have a harder time seeing past the facade of sincerity.

For more information, see the previous post.

See also Stephen Colbert, and, in particular, his speech at the White House press dinner.

(What were they thinking inviting him? I can only assume that they fell prey to the aforementioned dangers and somehow thought that he actually was the ultra-conservative wingnut he pretends to be...)

I love deadpan humour. It's fun. I even love the word. 'Deadpan'. LOL.

In real life, I exercise it often. Though it doesn't always work - sometimes people take me seriously :p Which is why when I do it online, most of the times I'll go 'just kidding, just kidding!' afterwards. Except with certain people or in certain circumstances where I know people will understand I'm joking.

See ya,
Anna.
