It's been raining all weekend. Supposed to keep raining all day and into the night. Got kind of windy on Saturday, too. We had a series of brownouts. The dog was terrified. We also lost cable service for all of Sunday. No internet, no TV, and of course our VOIP line was out. They got that fixed, but then the township announced that the water system had been compromised so we can't trust what's in the pipes (which, of course, impacts handwashing, toothbrushing, etc etc). Oh, and we lost some pieces of roofing, too. (That on top of having replaced the dishwashers and the washing machine this month. And the heating system last year. House is 20 years old. Can't wait to find out what's next.)

Amazing how little it takes to knock us back 100 years. Water falls from the sky, some trees get blown over, and the things we've come to take for granted no longer function reliably.

In other news... we called my niece for her birthday. (9! How'd that happen already??) Spoke to bro-in-law, who said it was the first call of the day, then handed the phone over to the bday girl. Mom did most of the talking when niece was on the phone, but Dad & I got the necessary words in. Then we spoke to her little brother. (He's 6 1/2.) He said hi to Mom. Dad asked him who else was on the phone. He recognized Dad's voice. I asked him who else was on the phone. He said Mom again. Dad asked him who else was on the phone. He guessed the dog. I asked him who else was on the phone. He was stumped. Dad & I asked him a couple more times. "Wait... Is that Uncle Paul??" Yes, yes it is. Laughed about that. He handed the phone back to his dad. I spoke to him briefly, and we hung up.

Went to bed for the day. (Nocturnal this week, though coming around. Gained an hour in that thanks to DST.) Woke up, checked email. (Luckily, Kindle internet was working - cell towers hadn't been taken out. Kindle is limited, though. Can check a couple of email accounts, but not all, and can't log in to even the mobile versions of LJ & DW.) Had a message from bro-in-law saying that bday girl was about to go to bed but there was still time to call if I got up soon.

It's not at all unusual for me to answer the phone and have people think I'm Dad, or at least be confused. But this time both of us were on the phone, taking turns talking, and not even my own family could tell the difference. It was pretty amusing.

In the morning, after dinner, I called back to speak to the day-after-bday girl. Made sure she knew I had called her, and had a good 10 mins just chatting. So that was fun and it all worked out in the end. But still... "Who else is on the phone?" "Uh..." "C'mon, who else?" "Uh... wait, is that Uncle Paul??" In the most confused, surprised, and incredulous tone. Hee.
