Laptop is now mostly dead. Went to reinstall the audio drivers, got the hal.dll error again, decided to try some alternative solutions, on the off chance they'd be more effective, and now it freezes in the midst of booting up. I can (sometimes) boot to Safe Mode, but nothing I do there fixes the issue. Gonna have to see what Dell support can do. (Luckily, I got the extended service plan when I bought it. It's got just under a year left.)
Meantime, Mom has been informed that her ISP will no longer support the software that is the most recent the old dinosaur (16 years, I think?) of a computer she uses can handle. So we'll be getting rid of that one.
Which means that we'll all be sharing the family desktop. Not that big a deal, really. Except that Dad is addicted to Freecell and Mom never had occasion to learn computer cluster etiquette. (Email takes priority over games. Work takes priority over email. If there are no computers available and your need takes priority, then you politely request access.)
The upshot for me is that I'll be online less and I won't have ready access to certain programs, cookies, etc. Also, I'll be using a shared computer located in a public space. Kind of limits my ability to post locked entries, for example. And though I did install Trillian on this comp, I don't have it running nearly as often.
Of course, it's not like I've been around so much lately anyway. For a number of reasons. Comp trouble. Fatigue. Trying to spend more time with family. Finding opportunities to spend RL time with friends. And dealing (or trying to deal) with some emotional conflicts.
Anyway, just wanted to let you know what was going on.
In unrelated news, I have a number of DW invite codes. Free to a good home.
And now... off to the park with the dog. Before it gets dark and/or rainy.
