hatman: HatMan, my alter ego and face on the 'net (Default)

You know what's ironic?

Well, that's okay. Neither does Alanis Morisette.

No, wait. That's not what I meant. The ironic thing...

It's about userpics. I've never really gotten the point of them. My default pic is my avatar, my face on the net. And my face is... my face. I'm not going to put someone else's face there or something, you know? I guess my face does change sometimes based on my mood and what I'm saying. But that's a limited thing. For the most part, my face is my face and that's that.

But, slowly, I've been adding userpics to my LJ Basic account. I uploaded the 6th one... just a few months ago, it feels like. Maybe in November, actually. Still, not so long ago. More recently, I came up with a new one. Was momentarily confused when LJ told me I didn't have space for another. I looked through the ones I had and found one that I'd never really used very much and got rid of it. No problem.

And now... I've got a couple of Dreamwidth icons that I made. One that I have mixed feelings about, since it does have some negative tone to it and I like the idea of just cheering for the shiny thing without booing the older and somewhat tarnished thing (which, really, is still quite useful, and still connects me to the vast majority of my friends). The other one, though, is just pure shiny:

I've been thinking about adding it to my LJ, particularly for DW-related posts. Do just a bit more to promote the service, show my love, encourage friends to check it out, etc.

And here's where the irony comes in... I'm happy with my 6. (And I have used all 6 and don't want to confuse old posts by replacing the associated icon. What happens when you do that, anyway?) I don't really want to get rid of any of them. So I actually started wondering if maybe (for the first time for this journal) I should get some paid LJ time. Just so I could upload a DW icon.

Yeah... that's how it starts.

And before you know it you have fifty of the things.

It's weird!

I have a paid account at LJ, but I've never even come close to using all my icon slots!

I'm working on creating more icons though, icons that are representative of my username, but also of the various moods & reasons I post. It's slow going though! (I not only have to actually *decide* what I want, but then figure out if I want to take a picture, or ask a good friend to make something for me).

So evidently you can't edit comments yet!

I ... can't help you with the getting LJ time to upload a DW icon dilemma.

However, what happens when you delete one icon and add another is one of two things.

If you assign the new icon any of the same keywords as the deleted icon, it will appear on entries and comments where that transferred keyword was selected to display the icon. For instance, I have had an icon keyworded to I <3 you all! for ages. When I first used it, I think I had an icon (since lost, damn it) of Groo ♥ Lorne. (Angel Joke) At one point, it had something about kissing girls. It's currently the icon you see above. Anyplace where I had originally used the (now lost) Groo/Lorne icon will show the one above.

Any place you used a keyword that you have now abandoned, the icon that shows will be your current default icon.

As in "yes, it's supremely ironic that you're considering paying money to LJ so you can upload DW-promoting userpic!"

That's quite ironic. (And I really do think!)

I've had 100+ icons on LJ for as long as I can remember... I think ever since they began offering the 100 userpic add-on. I'm a sucker for pretty pictures. Do you mind if I snag your shiny DW icon? I will give credit where it's due!
