Got the new HDD today. It works. Boots up nice and clean. Which means that the old HDD is most likely the problem.
I also found out why the old HDD wasn't booting at all this weekend. Seems that when I was switching adapters on the drive itself (so I could try plugging it in as an external), some of the pins got bent. Oops.
I straightened them out, but it still wasn't being recognized as an external drive. So, I swapped the drives again. Took several tries, but I got the old one to boot up, and got the new one recognized as an external. I'm now busy transferring files over to the new drive. Then I'll see if I can Ghost the old drive (making sure, this time, that the image is fully intact... and assuming that I have enough blank CDs to do it). Whether that works or not, I'll have the important files on an intact HDD, and then it's just a matter of finding a way to transfer them over to the new comp.
So... light at the end of the tunnel. It'll take some time and effort, but everything should be doable. With any luck (shh, don't tell Murphy!), there shouldn't be any more glitches from here...
Oh, and the tech called to set up an appointment to fix the floppy drive. I was out, but that should be taken care of soon.
Then, when everything's done, I'll just need to figure out what to do with the old comp. (Suggestions still welcome.)

The only person I can think of who needs a new(er) computer is maybe Pel. She's been working a lot to save up for a new one (a Mac! *eeks*), but this might come in handy. Not sure. Anyway, dunno how wise/feasible it'd be to send a computer to Norway.
