1. Irony is using a cane because walking hurts, only to find yourself making extra trips because you can't carry as much stuff with only one hand free.

2. Just for the record, when I said I wouldn't have access to certain cookies and programs and such, I was talking about things like Eudora (my mail program), my private journal (which I don't want to access from the family comp), and my webcomic bookmarks (which I didn't want cluttering up the shared family comp). In case anyone was wondering.

3. Something randomly occurred to me a few days ago: No one ever says, "When life gives you sugar water, make lemonade."

4. The Statue of Liberty is an American icon. Symbol of freedom, liberty, the American Dream. Beacon of hope seen by shiploads of immigrants, their first welcome to our land.

After 9/11, the Bush administration closed off access to Liberty Island, citing the need for security upgrades. Eventually, with a number of upgrades in place, the site was reopened to the public. However, as things stand now you need a reservation to get into the museum (located in the statue's pedestal) and the statue itself is closed off. Where once there was a staircase leading up through the inside of the statue, at the top of the pedestal there is now a thick plexiglass window. It's unreachable and impenetrable. Looking through it, you can see part of Lady Liberty's foot and the base of the winding stairs that were once freely climbed by endless throngs. (Or, put another way, you get a quick look up her dress and nothing more.) No longer can you climb on high and look out from her crown.

In just a few weeks, on July 4, Independence Day, that will change. The Obama administration has announced that they will reopen the statue to the public. Fear will hold us back no longer. Liberty will be ours once more.

It seems apt, does it not?
