Long story short... I ended up reinstalling Windows. (I was going to do a repair install, but the CDs I had wouldn't let me.)
Fortunately, at the advice of a friend, I'd partitioned my hard drive back when I first got this comp, against just such an eventuality. Just about anything that wasn't Windows was kept on the secondary partition. And I had a fairly recent system backup on the external drive.
Of course, I still need(ed) to reinstall all my programs and stuff, and some of the CDs are missing. I can't get the audio drivers to work right, along with a couple of other things.
But I've gradually been getting things back into shape. The comp is working again. Had one more hal.dll error, but system restore fixed that this time. (I'm not sure what did it, exactly, but I'm wondering if it was deleting the hidden user account created by the MS NET framework thingy that I probably don't actually need. I've left it alone this time, and things have been okay since.)
Upside is that the system is free of a lot of the clutter I've amassed over the years. Programs I installed and don't really use anymore.
I've been working at it one thing at a time, with much waiting and installing and rebooting. And that hasn't left much for blogging - writing or reading.
In other news, I've been pretty tired this week. Not sure why, since I've been getting a good amount of sleep. But I've got an appointment with the sleep doc tomorrow. Ironically, (as happens far too often) I'm off schedule and thus will have to lose a couple hours' sleep in order to make the appointment. Ah well. Hopefully, it'll be worth it.
Other thoughts that more properly belong in a locked post, but though there are many of them (having to do with family and life and medical stuff and other things) I don't really have a firm enough grasp on any of them to write them out. So... you're saved, I guess. Or something.
Just thought I'd let you know what was up, why I haven't been around, and why it might be another couple of days before I am.
ETA: Forgot to mention a little something that some of you might appreciate. Probably only on LJ-side, actually. The comp's name is Jimmy Olsen. I had to wipe it out and start over. I'm leaving the original backup files as they were, just in case. The new backup therefore needed a new name. I chose "Justin."
