Apparently, I've got yet more email being bounced for no reason, without indication that it even existed. If you've emailed me and haven't heard back, please... comment here, I guess. At least that I can be pretty sure I'll see.

Meantime, I opened IE today (it does have a purpose now and again) to be informed that the shiny new version 8 was available. I did some quick poking around on the web. Consensus seemed to be that it still sucks but at least it's better than IE7. I installed it.

Ow.

It keeps giving me this message that add-ons are disabled and that I should look at the add-on manager. Fine. Add-on manager takes forever to load. Not only does it take a while to even come up, but it takes a while to load each of the add-on lists. And when it finally does load, it assures me that everything is enabled.

Actually, any kind of menu or subprogram that pops up in a new window of its own takes forever to load. And new tabs take even longer to load.

To top it off... I decided to check MS Update to see if there were any new updates for me now that I had IE8 in place. Security patches, for example. And... it wouldn't load. I mean, I could get the site to open, but it said I needed to run the ActiveX control in order for the site to work. And the prompt that gives you the option of installing an ActiveX control never even popped up. Even after I messed with the security settings.

It suggested I use "compatibility mode" (wherein it pretends to be an earlier version of IE in order to display older pages properly), but that did not help.

Tried closing it and reopening it. Got a message that one of my add-ons (Sonic Drive Letter Access) could cause issues and could IE please disable it for me? So, fine. Said yes. It crashed before it even managed to finish opening.

Tried again. Got a notice that my last session crashed, and would I like to restore it? No thanks, just open a plain tab. Crashed again. I now cannot get IE to even finish loading before it dies. Great. *sigh*

ETA: Re-enabled the offending add-on via the Control Panel (which lets you open Internet Options). And... IE still will not load.

Ah, wait. Tried one more time and got a page that actually purports to help. Says IE turned off all add-ons in self-defense because it's not compatible with DLA. So that's why ActiveX wasn't working, I guess.

Fine, re-disabled DLA. And...

*waits*

*checks Task Manager*

IE is currently using 50% of my CPU's time. Not dead, but not so much with the loading.

And...

It crashed. Again. Right.

Trying again.

Two minutes later, it's still using 50% of CPU time and still hasn't finished loading the first (blank) tab. I guess this is the first time IE8 is loading with add-ons enabled. But still... four minutes and counting... and still using 50% CPU. ... And now it's crashed again. Are we having fun yet?
