Caught a movie on TV last night. My Stepmother Is An Alien. I'd caught it before and vaguely remembered liking it, but it was better than I'd remembered.

I mean, okay. It's kind of stupid. The plot is (delightfully?) thin. And the science... The science hurts. But thankfully, it's only there as a flimsy pretext, so there isn't much of it. Also, the special effects are from 1988, but, again, there aren't many of them, so it's okay.

It stars Dan Aykroyd, in that brief window between Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II when he was still good. He plays a SETI scientist who, thanks to a stray lightning bolt, accidentally sends a plotion beam out to a distant planet. The planet will be destroyed in a matter of days unless another beam is sent out.

The planet (which I shall call New New Krypton) is populated by hyperevolved humanoid beings with a society so austerely utopian that they have literally forgotten how to sneeze. They know everything, but it's all in books. Their council (seen as giant glowing hooded heads in pure white) is led by Tony Jay (better known to some of you as Nigel St. John). They dispatch Kim Basinger (at what is possibly the peak of her hotness) to fix things.

Aykroyd's daughter is played by a young Alyson Hannigan, and Seth Green has a cameo as her date. Which is awesome. (He only comes up to her shoulder. And he plays the role perfectly. As... well, as Seth Green. So nonchalantly over-the-top that he appears almost normal. Or something like that.)

Jon Lovitz is also in it, in his usual role, but for once it's toned down enough that it's not actually annoying.

Anyway, it's silly and fun and funny and well worth watching, especially if you're tired and looking for a good bit of fluff... check it out. :)
