Having a good time on vacation, in general. Some family strife here and there, but it's great to be able to spend time with my nieces and nephews. And my sibs, too. (Usually...) Not that I've been doing that as much as I should. Been sleeping late, as usual. And feeling too sleepy to socialize for a while after I "wake up." But we've had some good times.

Went sailing yesterday. That was a lot of fun. And the annual fishing trip with Mom. We've been going with the same captain (nephew of the captain of the sailboat) for 21 years.

And the day before that, we did a treasure hunt. I came up with the idea last year. Buried a little wooden chest from the local knicknack shop, with a few gold dollar coins inside. Made up clues for the kids. Last year, it was croquet-based. I came up with the story of a pirate (nephew loves pirates) named Davey Croquet. Used croquet mallets as the distance measurement (since paces aren't exactly reliable), and the croquet goal stick (forget the name) to give the order of the color-coded clues.

But the measurement was hard, and I didn't know how to set it up for three kids (other sis had only come for the first week that year). And we're worried about ticks in the yard of this house. (We're renting a different house this year.) But last year's was a lot of fun. My nephew kept asking for one this year.

So I set it up with clues to places in the house. Each of the three kids got a question, and the answer filled in one of the blanks in the clue. Questions were color-coded to match the clues (the clue papers weren't big enough to hold multiple choice questions for three kids). We chased around the house and found the hidden clues (each one hinting at the location of the next) until, finally, it led to the treasure box buried in a corner near the driveway. Was a lot of fun. And the adults were suitably impressed.

Just thought I'd share.

Speaking of sharing... I thought I'd point out WOWIO. They've got tons of ebooks. You can read them online for free (with ads) or download for a small fee. Stumbled across it through a webcomic I read (they "publish" their collected graphic novels there), and I've found some interesting things among the site's ever-growing eclectic mix.
