Jury Duty

... I got jury duty. For the first time.

I was wondering what was taking them so long. I mean, I've been eligible for it for over a decade. Part of me has kind of been looking forward to it.

Problem is that I don't know what to do about it. I'd like to serve. But my sleep schedule is all over the place and I can't always drive and I can't always concentrate and... *sigh*

I guess I'll show up and see what they say. Assuming they still want me. I'm supposed to call the night before and see if they really need me.

Even if they do need you to show up, you may not get called. I spent a whole day in the pool, watching movies and reading a book, and never got called. I was only slightly disappointed.

Hmm. Thanks. That'll help me be more prepared.

(Hey, maybe I'll be able to take my new video watch...)

Jury duty! o_O That's either really awesome or really lame. Are you going to decide whether somebody gets the chair? :O

But yeah, you could just go and explain your health problems, and see if they still want to take you.

Ooh! Ooh! And when they ask you if there's a reason that you shouldn't be a juror, you should say that you're Batman. ;)
Okay, maybe you shouldn't. But that was a good comic. And maybe you can still convince 11 other angry people one at a time that the defendant is innocent, and the lone hold-out is just being prejudiced and mean. =D

Oh, and you can scowl at people and look thoughtful. DUDE! You should totally go! =)

lol, no. Unlikely that I'd get a case that serious. And, in any case, I hear NJ just did away with the death penalty.

But yeah, you could just go and explain your health problems, and see if they still want to take you.

Well, the thing is the form has a checkbox. Are you physically/mentally able to serve? If not, you're supposed to have a letter from a doctor explaining how and why. So... I could probably do that. But I'm not sure if I should. Ideally, I'd like to serve. It's my duty. But I'm honestly not sure that I'm able.

I agree; you should go and explain your health problems. They probably won't call you, even if you are selected originally.

Ironically, I got my first jury notice this month, too. Not an actual call yet, but I got the form in the mail that I had to fill out and send back in, putting me in the pool for 2008. All these years, and I've never been called before. Meanwhile, my sister has done it like three times, and she's moved around every few years. Weird.

My dilemma was the fact that Jim will be on sabbatical this year, so we might be out of state for the 08-09 academic year. I wrote on my form that I "might be living out of state for the last six months of 2008", but that I wouldn't know for sure until the spring. Considering we don't have a ton of jury trials in this area anyway, I figure the chances aren't that good that I'd get called anyway. We'll see!

Going might be tough. My parents will be out of town. And they want me there at 8am. And I've never been to the courthouse. And parking there, I hear, is an adventure in and of itself. But I guess I'll give it a shot. And, yeah. Probably not be chosen. But at least I'll have tried. And, worse come to worst, I can take a cab to the courthouse.

Guess I'll fill in the questionaire. Tell them I *hope* I'm physically up to it. And go in. And see what happens.

Hmm, my mom's been called once or twice, I think, but I can't remember if she actually ended up serving or not. How old do you have to be to do it?

18, I believe. You're then entered into the pool. And they call people from the pool randomly, as needed. So you could get called immediately. Or not called for years and years.
