Good timezone, everybody! I come with two announcements!

First, we've opened up requests for treating! You can check out that list right over here.

Second, we are now two weeks from the deadline on February 23 (anywhere in the world)!

If you haven't posted yet, now's a great time to check out our Posting Guide here or our Embed Guide here. And if you’re not sure how it's going, or have some concerns, you have options!

Extension. If you’re sure you can complete your assignment, you just need a little more time, this option is for you. To request an extension, please email purim_gifts@yahoo.com.

The backup protocol. This option is for people who’re not sure whether they can complete their assignment, but who really really want to. A backup is a pinch hitter assigned ahead of time. If you complete your assignment, that’s great! Aaaaand there’s a chance of treats. If you don’t complete your assignment, you can call it off at the last minute - while your pinch hitter had had a much longer time to prepare. To request a backup, please email purim_gifts@yahoo.com.

Partial default. This option is for people who already know they can’t complete their assignment, but who want to post what they can complete. To request a partial default, please email purim_gifts@yahoo.com.

Full default. If you’re absolutely sure you can’t complete your assignment, this option is for you. You can activate it by email purim_gifts@yahoo.com, or by hitting the “Default” button at the AO3. Either way, you won’t be penalized for it; life happens, and we get that.

And if you’re not sure which of those options is right for you, please email purim_gifts@yahoo.com! The mod team's here to help, and we'd much rather do that as early as possible.

In the Time Before - no relation to The Land Before Time - it was very important to have a "Halo Killer." There were many attempts, wrought at a profundity of expense and labor. They would have been very surprised to learn, years after this conflict had passed into history, that the storied franchise and its laconic green action figure would die to suicide.

1. Got my teeth cleaned today and since Carla was awake before my appointment (which was at 8:30am), she was able to drop me off so I could just walk home. The dentist is a good walking distance away, but with my appointment being on the early side, I wouldn't have had time to cool off once I arrived, and I didn't want to risk being hot and/or sweaty and having to get right in the chair. But I did get a nice walk on the way home, though, and it was fully overcast, which is definitely my preference for walks.

2. Since the dentist appointment was a good excuse and I didn't really have a pressing reason to go into the office, I just worked from home today. I think I'll have to go in every day the rest of the week, so it was nice to stay home today.

3. I love these sunny window shots!

One key difference between web and AI — the two most recent tech revolutions — would be the impact of money. That is, the web was built with the idea that information wants to be free and everyone should have as much access to content as possible. By contrast, AI has access inequality built in. Compute and expertise cost money and people, esp. businesses, would get dramatically different outcomes from AI using free and paid services. Similar to social networking, the "free" aspect is a one-way street now: the public provides their data for free and hopes to get something valuable in return.

Would hospital care after minor dog attack injuries expose a first trimester pregnancy?

Details:
I have a story I'm currently working on set in a modern type world, and a plot point where one of the two main characters is attacked by a pack of street dogs and gets some minor scratch and bite injuries. I'm thinking just a few stitches at most. I can guess they'll need "just in case" antibiotics and rabies shots because of the bites, but would common care involve any tests that would expose an early pregnancy?

Goals:
I'm trying to keep the pregnancy a surprise for the other main character later in the story, so a "some hospitals would do these tests but some wouldn't" could be ruled that this time it wasn't done. But if it's very common to do certain blood or other tests that would easily reveal a pregnancy, that's a problem. And having the other main character who's acting as their savior/caregiver in this scenario decide not to get them treatment wouldn't be in character or suit his arc in the story, even with minor wounds that in theory could be treated at home.

Do I need to change details of the attack, or depict this medical team as negligent? Or is the stealth of this pregnancy safe?

It’s been hectic here.

I’ve been sick as heck with cedar fever. Just miserable enough to want to take off work but not enough to actually do it.

Bad Bunny - what an amazing show!

Ella - she ate a toadstool today and had to go to the emergency vet. She’s ok (she threw it up almost immediately) but she’s very unhappy about having to fast.

Folks who use Discord, are y’all leaving it and if so where are you going? Even if I was cool with providing my ID to use it, I have zero confidence that they would keep my info secure. No other organization seems to be able to.

I guess I will just gradually disappear from the internet as age verification kicks in everywhere. I miss the early, wild days.

Previous poll review
In the Neighbours poll, 56.8% of respondents know their neighbours well enough to nod and wave, 52.3% have each other's phone numbers/email and chat in passing, and 22.7% socialise/lend things. In ticky-boxes, cat photos came second to hugs, 59.1% to 70.5%. Thank you for your votes! ♥

Reading
Listening to Barrayar (Bujold's Vorkosigan saga) with Andrew. Other than that, just a little bit of fanfic.

Kdramas
I'm cooling on Behind the Bar because a lot of the cases are deeply unpleasant.
For example: the one that had me noping out is a doctor being accused of murder because a man she unsuccessfully treated on a plane is a convicted paedophile. (I ffwed the scene, so I don't know if the failure was deliberate.) The doctor is suspected because she treated the man's young victim in the past, and also refused to treat him then.
I restarted Strongest Delivery Man for Kim Sun-ho, the second male lead, but I don't much care about the main pairing (iirc, there's potential slashiness between the two guys, but it takes a while to get there). I started the first episode of Our Universe, but backbuttoned when the toddler appeared. (Sometimes I can kidfic, but often I cannot.) Now, I don't know.

Other TV
We finished Wonder Man. I liked it a lot -- imperfect characters, and the redemptive power of friendship, woohoo! (I didn't end up slashing the leads; Ben Kingsley is kind of terrible. But I could be persuaded.)

Still going on The Pitt. Finished our rewatch of We Are Lady Parts season 2. ♥ ♥ ♥

And a couple of movies: The Friend in which Naomi Watts inherits a great dane from a friend; full of humanity and grief. And Dancing the Invisible, a documentary about Jill Bilcock, an Australian film editor who's worked with Baz Luhrmann and many others; fascinating, full of close creative friendships and competence porn.

Audio entertainment
Relistened to John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme season 9, which is a series of interlinked sketched about multiple generations of a family. Being me, I still want OT3 fic for the most uptight/least likeable character, his wife and their good friend, lol.

Also, Writing Excuses, a Death of 1000 Cuts writing ramble, and one episode of You Can Learn Chinese. (Taking a mental health break from the politics.)

Writing/making things
I posted my first fic of the year, a belated [community profile] fandomtrees treat for [personal profile] teaotter:
Title: Honey Tea (1761 words) [General Audiences]
Fandom: 조립식 가족 | Family by Choice (South Korea TV)
Relationships: Kim Daewook/Yoon Jeongjae
Characters: Kim Daewook, Yoon Jeongjae, Kim Sanha
Additional Tags: Empty Nest Syndrome (sort of), Medicating with Alcohol, Insecurity, Define the Relationship talks, Friends to Lovers, Co-parents to lovers, Non-Linear Narrative, Set during episode 9
Summary:

If ever there was a night for obliterating himself, it was tonight. The facts of Sanha leaving and the trials he’d face in Seoul were too depressing to contemplate, so Daewook let himself brood over smaller, more selfish miseries. His apartment was empty. Haejoon had left, too. Everything was changing, the family disbanded, and where did that leave Daewook? Left behind again. Thrown aside.

I'm currently noodling one of the things I started for Yuletide, but I'm not quite sure where it's going.

I've attempted two Lady Parts drawings, neither of which came out right. But I have smudgers/blenders now (much thanks to those who suggested them!), so I'm messing around with shading more, which is fun.

Life/health/mental state things
Yesterday I wrote, drew Saira, drove, made a huge batch of dumplings, and stayed up too late doing dishes. Today, to no one's surprise, my arms are grumbly. So after this, we're going for a walk in the local bird sanctuary.

Some life-admin to-dos are looming over me. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

Food
I'm pretty sure the part of my scribbled down Korean pork dumpling recipe that says 20 ginger is actually supposed to be 2T ginger. If I'm right, I used way too much.

Good things
Andrew and Halle. Smudgers! Learning. Dreamwidth. Fandom. TV and audiobooks. Sunshine and going for walks. WIPs. Early night tonight. The dishes are done -- thanks, past me!

Capcom just released a demo for Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection and I love it. The demo seems to have come out for pretty much everything but I grabbed it for the PS5 Pro and it’s gorgeous. Plenty of people love the Monster Hunter series but I feel like the “Stories” side games get overlooked. That sort of makes sense as the Stories games are very different. These are turn-based RPG’s with an anime art style and a focus on younger characters with monster collecting/ battling. Think of them like Pokemon + Monster Hunter and it’s just as cool as it sounds.

I dreamed that I was taking some computer programming course where, in the classroom, I had to develop some real-world robotic mimicry system like: I draw and, as I draw, it stitches thread so as to reproduce the lines I'm drawing. We had a reasonable amount of time for completing the task because the class was a double-period, at the start of the day.

The dream transitioned to a different activity that I now forget more, where I was facing a related programming assignment but outdoors: I was approaching a small, ruined outbuilding where I was to perform some part of the task, not able to take long because some rather autonomous thing was out there pursuing me.

It's time for another question thread!

The rules:

- You may ask any dev-related question you have in a comment. (It doesn't even need to be about Dreamwidth, although if it involves a language/library/framework/database Dreamwidth doesn't use, you will probably get answers pointing that out and suggesting a better place to ask.)
- You may also answer any question, using the guidelines given in To Answer, Or Not To Answer and in this comment thread.

  3. My team won a prestigious award at work and I got to read the nomination and it says really lovely things about the work we do.
  4. I already had the book Humankind: a hopeful history out from the library and after encountering Too Many Informations about the Epstein files, I started reading it and it is exactly what I need right now (although I would very much like to know what e.g. Maimonides' thoughts are on Bregman's argument, as well as wisdom traditions from India and China; maybe we'll get there).
  5. The public library is giving out free seeds which means it WILL be spring someday.

South Texas is a heightened example of what contractors are facing across the country in areas where U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity has intensified. Home builders in Minnesota relayed similar experiences of raids picking up whole work crews, even those with legal documentation, said Grace Keliher, executive vice president of the Builders Association of Minnesota. Nationally, a third of commercial contractors reported being affected by immigration-enforcement actions in the past six months, according to a January report by trade group Associated General Contractors of America.

Two guards at a nearby immigration detention center said they frequently see detainees come in still wearing dusty work clothes from construction jobsites. A significant portion of the men they now guard have valid work permits, they said, which they haven’t seen in previous administrations, but those detainees still wait weeks to see a judge before being released.

Because of that, people are afraid to work whether they have legal authorization or not, a reality that has hit the industry and broader regional economy hard. Paul Rodriguez, CEO of Valley Land Title, estimated that residential construction activity fell 30% in recent months in Hidalgo County.

https://www.wsj.com/politics/policy/texas-immigration-raids-economy-87e23e2e

ICE/DHS agents have quotas for daily arrests and they are highly incentivized to fulfill the quotas. Moreover, arrests counted against the quotas are not revised down even if a person arrested during the raid is released later. Therefore, doing the right thing, i.e. arresting only illegals, puts an honest and conscientious agent at a disadvantage because a) he'd have to spend more time doing verification; b) his numbers would be lower than average because they would not include lawful immigrants. This is a clear case of government corruption, where doing the right thing is disincentivized.

Anyone running a business knows that incentives matter because wrong incentives lead to wrong outcomes. When people voted for Trump in 2024 they partially justified their choice by the fact that in their opinion he was a good (rich!) businessman. What we see now is that he is a good businessman when maximizing his own profits and/or advantages, not pursuing public good. Ultimately, private business and public governance are completely different domains of expertise. I only hope is that the clique of scoundrels (Trump, Witkoff, Lutnick) and morons (RFK jr) will not do too much damage to the country.

upd. One more thing: Trump keeps touting the growing value of people's assets in 401Ks due to the stock market rise. Of course, as a businessman he knows the difference between value of assets and cash flow/liquidity: he himself went bankrupt several times because he was "assert rich and cash poor". This divide — assets vs cash flow — comes loud and clear in surveys, both formal and informal. https://www.wsj.com/economy/consumers/americans-rate-trump-economy-21b85459
