Before lolcats, before stuffonmycat, before computers were even conceived of, there was...
Thomas Edison?
Just found this video and had to share.
(According to IMDB, the cats were trained, part of a Vaudeville act. And that's their trainer, Prof Henry Welton, in the background. But it was filmed in Edison's studio. Kind of disappointing, really. I love the idea of Edison doing that with his own cats and showing the film to everyone who dropped in for a visit...)
Also... Dude! Mark Twain! There's no sound, and he's just walking around, puffing on his cigar, but still... It's Mark Twain. And, (spoiler alert!) in the second half, he's having a tea with his daughters (still no sound). It's a slice of history.
(It's been a slow weekend on my flist, so I don't feel so bad about spamming you.)
